Description | An October 1918 report to the YMCA (at Fold3) by one Conrad Hoffman, dealt with Hoffman's visit to American POWs at the Rastatt Germany POW camp. The POWs played baseball at the camp. The YMCA supplied the equipment. Both indoor and outdoor baseball are mentioned. Steuer, "Pursuit of an Unparalleled Opportunity. The American YMCA and Prisoner of War Diplomacy Among the Central Power Nations during World War I, 1914-1923," ch 14, discusses American POWs and baseball. The chapter has a photo of American soldiers playing baseball at Rastatt. Plus it has an image of "The Barbed Wireless" a Rastatt camp newsletter issued Sept. 14, 1918, which reports on a baseball game played between the "75s" and the "Shell Shocks" of Block 9. The newsletter mentions that the YMCA had supplied them with 1 baseball, 1 glove, 2 softballs and 2 softball bats. |
