Description | The Ottawa Citizen reported on the Sons of Temperance Picnic held in the village of Metcalfe, Ontario (which is now part of the amalgamated city of Ottawa) on Wednesday, September 13, 1865. The picnic featured many activities, including games. "Cricket and base ball, sack, wheel-barrow, hurdle and flat races each in their turn gave zest to the afternoon's enjoyment." The article goes on to say that "...the afternoon's proceedings harmoniously terminated with a game of ball played by the ladies - alone." It's unclear if that was a reference to baseball, another bat-and-ball game, or some other activity altogether. |
