Description | The Austin Southern Intelligencer, February 23, 1859, reported “a real old fashioned game of base or town ball” being played in Austin, on the prairie north of the Capitol. The teams made up mostly of government and store clerks, with fifteen men on a side. From the context, it appears the game played was probably town-ball or some predecessor game, as the writer of the article said the game reminded him of the ball game he played as a youth, and that there were 15 men on a side.
