Description

On September 12, 1868, the Nashville Base Ball Club hosted the Knoxville Holstons for the championship of the state, and the home club prevailed 34-10. A lengthy, play-by-play account was published in the Nashville Republican Banner the following day. This is one of the most detailed descriptions of an early Tennessee match available, and it highlights the generally clumsy fielding of the period.

The match was played on the Nashville club’s home field, “near Fort Houston,” which was located approximately at the current location of Nashville’s Music Row district.
