Description | The Washington National Republican, Sept. 14, 1866 reports that the newly formed Gymnastic team lost to the Jefferson Club 49-22, at the Gymnastic's grounds on 9th St. The new club is composed of members of Brady's Gym. Same, May 28, 1867 reports that 8 DC clubs met to form a picked team to play the Nationals. The attempt failed. Attending were the Jefferson, Potomac, Union, Empire, Gymnastic, Continental, Olympic and Interior Clubs. The Gymnastic played the Grafton soon after (same July 1, 1867). This club was headed by Abner S. Brady, a noted physical fitness guru and weight lifting pioneer, who had gyms in Washington and NYC. This club may have changed its name to the Olympian. See New York Clipper, July 13, 1867, announcing the formation of the Olympian BBC with Brady as president. |
