| Description | The Louisville Courier, March 31, 1859 has an ad for a meeting of the Eclipse BBC. [ba] "On Thursday last the Eclipse Base Ball Club - which, by the way, is a Club of no mean consequence - divided itself for the purpose of having a little game between its married and its single members. A large number of persons, of both sexes, were in attendance, and despite the excessively hot weather, seemed to enjoy the sport hugely. The Benedicks, of course, were victorious." [gp] Same, Aug. 20, 1858, announces the formation of the Eclipse BBC on Aug. 18th, with C. U. Shreve as president. In 1862 the Louisville Courier Journal reported that up to the Civil War, the Eclipse was considered the champion club of the state. See LCJ, June 26, 1862. Louisville was the 12th largest US city in 1860, with a population of about 68,000. |
