Description

From Protobal Entry #1860.41 – Base Ball Tourney in California

SF's Eagle Club beat Sacramento twice, 36-32 and 31-17 It was noted that SF's Gelston, a leadoff batter and catcher, was from the Eagle Club in New York, and "the Sacs" pitcher and leadoff batter Robinson was from Brooklyn's Putnams. In addition to a $100 prize for the winning team, the best player at each position received a special medal. The games took place in Sacramento.

Angus Macfarlane, 5/10/2010, notes that first game was reported on September 24.

"In September [1860], two thousand people attended the first state baseball tournament, held in Sacramento as part of an agricultural fair.  Some San Franciscans may have traveled via stagecoach to see their ballclub, now known as the Eagles, face rival Sacramento.  Accounts of this best-of-three championship series vary.  The visitors, led by John Fisher, wither took two straight or won the first game easily and were leading the second by a wide margin when daylight ran out and play was halted.  In any event, the Eagles claimed the $350 winner's prize and a silver championship trophy, confirming their pre-tourney reputation as the best team west of the Mississippi."
