| Description | (TIE – 9 innings, called due to darkness) (NYC: “A large crowd of spectators were present, and great interest was manifested in the result of the contest. … [The game ended], amidst considerable applause and excitement, and some very hard feelings, too, we regret to say, the latter being caused by the interference and actions of parties who bet had [sic] heavily on the result, among whom were alike players and others who are prohibited from betting by the rules of the game. … Now, we respectfully ask ball players whether the rules are to be adhered to, to the letter, or violated with impunity, as they were on the occasion of this match? … The heavy betting by outsiders on the result of ball matches is sufficiently injurious to the interests of the game without adding the still worse custom of allowing parties playing in matches to indulge in it, especially when there are rules expressly prohibiting it. The result of the breach of sec. 30 of the rules on this match, was a most unfriendly contest; and but for the prudence of the umpire, on closing the game as he did, a general disturbance, and, perhaps, a series of fights would have ensued. We trust the good sense of the majority will lead them at once to put a stop to any more infringements of such important rules.”) |
