[1] "Base Ball – The 'Dysodia Base Ball Club' is the name of our society for the development of the muscles. If our citizens have been slow in organizing a Club, we cannot be accused of not going into the game heartily when it is once started. Last Tuesday was the first day of practice the Club had, and for beginners, the scoring was indeed creditable. Nothing can be more invigorating or pleasant for our shopkeepers and mechanics than to take a hand and play heartily for a few moments. A meeting will be held at the Court House this (Saturday) evening at 7 o’clock, for the purpose of perfecting the organization. All those desiring to take part in this interesting amusement are requested to be present at the appointed hour."
The date of the club's first practice “last Tuesday” was July 9, 1867.
[2] "Base Ball – We are credibly informed that a Base Ball Club has been formed in town. That a meeting was had, signatures received, money paid, and officers elected . . . . Success to the manly sport.
[3] "The society in Eugene is good,-better than on average in the State. Those whom I met are social, hospitable and intelligent. I have not met a more jolly set of fellows anywhere, and they play base ball too; and have attained so much proficiency that I should not be surprised to hear that the Dysodias’ (Dog-fennel’s) had challenged the state."
Mr. P.W. Gillette’s article appears in the August 2, 1867, edition of the Morning Oregonian and I first saw the team mentioned in a book about the city’s farmers’ market and later in other publications. I have yet to determine where for certain that they played, but it appears that it was in the area of what is now the county fairgrounds. The next later organized team of record in the city is associated with the University of Oregon in 1877. -- David Kemp
[4] Base Ball – The third game between the married and single men, occurred in this city last Thursday afternoon. A large concourse witnessed the playing, and all seemed intensely interested. The game was well contested; both sides doing their very best. The scoring stood: Married men, 41; single men, 30. The victorious party were invited to the residence of Dr. Hanchett, where they partook of a “game” dinner. This part of the programme varied considerably from the play in the field. All had “bases,” and every one “pitched” to the “center;” all the “fouls” were caught “on the fly;” and all made “home runs,” whether on a “ball” or a “foul;” and no matter how they played they kept their “innings” until brought up on the “short stop,” when they all retired in the best manner possible.
