The New Orleans Times Picayune, July 11, 1869, under the headline “Letter from Sewanee Plateau,” reports that “the students [of the University of the South at Sewanee] are divided into several clubs and nines, and have their baseball matches and other games…”

The University Record (of the U. of the South), June 22, 1872, notes that the college has two baseball nines, the Sewanee and Hardee BBCs. The Sewanee Purple, Oct. 24, 1956, says that the Sewanee and Hardee BBCs were founded in 1869.

Sewanee TN (current pop. about 2400) is about 40 miles NW of Chattanooga. It is the home of the University of the South.
