Description | The New Westminster Mainland Guardian, Feb. 15, 1871, reports that the New Westminster Base Ball Club has been formed. Same, June 16, 1888: "Baseball Match--On Wednesday afternoon last the return base ball match, between the clubs of this city and Vancouver, came off on the grounds of the latter, and resulted in a victory for our boys by a majority of one." Humber, "Diamonds of the North", p. 94, found an ad for New Westminster's May 24, 1862 Queen's Day celebration, which mentioned baseball. So some sort of informal baseball, or predecessor game, may have been played there in 1862. |
