Nick Name Chittenango Club
Earliest Known Date August 1859 -- not later than October 1859
Location Chittenango, NY, United States

The Oneida Sachem, August 1859, reports that the following local bbcs have been formed:

Peterboro, Cazenovia, Canastota, Chittenango, Munnsville, Oneida, and Mechanics of Chittenango, with the De Ruyter club about to be formed.

This issue reports on an Aug. 18, 1859 game between Syracuse and Canastota, won by Syracuse 44-38.  {See Morris, "Base Ball Pioneers," p. 72 for more on this game. This dates the issue of the Sachem).

The Chittenango club played the Olympic Club of Syracuse on October 3, 1859, the earliest ref we have to this club. They won the game by 9 runs.

The baseball clippings at the Onondaga Hist. Assn reveals three other games played, all in 1860.

Chittenango is about 15 miles east of Syracuse. Its population today is about 5000.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
