Description | The New York Clipper, Sept. 5, 1868, under the headline "Base Ball in the Far West," reports that the Benteen BBC of Fort Harker recently played the West BBC of Camp Davidson. Both teams were made up of 7th cavalry soldiers. The former team was named after Fred Benteen, an office in the 7th. The later 7th Cavalry Benteen BBC was formed March 1, 1873 in Nashville, TN. See Eberle, "Seventh U.S. Cavalry Base Ball in Kansas, 1868-1870," Fort Hays State U. Monograph
Fort Harker at that time was near present-day Kanopolis, KS. Camp Davidson was another name for Fort Wichita. |
