| Description | The Ottawa Free Press, June 12, 1871: "Base Ball meeting this evening at 8:30, corner of Sparks and Metcalfe Streets." Same, June 13, 1871, p. 3: "Base Ball. At the meeting for the election of officers of the Ottawa Base Ball Club, the following were elected... President, R. Lang, Vice President, Geo. Hutchison, Secy.-Treas. Geo. E. Armstrong ... "The members of the club now number thirty gentlemen, and perhaps an equal number purpose joining. On Thursday next a game will be played on Parliament Square, between the first nine and the field. The club will go to Prescott on Dominion Day to compete for the prize offered there." On Aug. 27, 1872, this club played the Boston Red Stockings, at a new baseball grounds at the foot of Elgin Street. The home team lost, 64-0. |

| Comment | Steve Rennie sends this: The Daily Journal of Ogdensburg, New York (Aug. 31, 1867) reported on game played an August 30, 1867 between Ottawa and Ogdensburg (they spelled it "Ogdensburgh" back then). It seems clear from the game report that the Ottawa players were not all that familiar with the sport. Here is the write-up in full, which you can see for yourself under the headline "Base Ball."
The match game of base ball played here, yesterday, between the Ottawa Club and the first nine of the Ogdensburgh Club, resulted in favor of Ogdensburgh, by a score of 141 to 20. In explanation it is proper to say that the Ottawa boys were not well posted on the rules of the game, and consequently missed making several tallies, and also got out several times when they should have avoided it,” wrote the Daily Journal. “They have, however, good material to make base ball players, and will do better next time. Their pitcher and catcher are as good as average, and all will do well when they understand the game better. They did not come boasting, but requested the privilege of coming to learn the game.
