David Block, "Pastime Lost" p. 238 mentions a "first known match [baseball game] played in England, when members of the Sheridan Base Ball Club of Ithaca, Michigan, who were serving as seamen aboard the American frigate USS Franklin, organized a game on June 15, 1871, while on shore leave in the town of Gravesend in Kent."
