Description | Great Falls was founded in 1883, and the railroad arrived in 1887. The Great Falls Tribune, May 29, 1886, wonders when Great Falls will organize a baseball club. Same, May 14, 1887: "Before the season is far advanced, Great Falls may have a flourishing base ball club." Same, June 25, 1887: "The Great Falls base ball club is practicing industriously each evening. If the boys stay with it until the Fourth the Fort Shaw boys will not have a dead walk-away." Same, July 6, 1887, of the celebrations on the Fourth: "The Ball Game. Play was called at around 9:30, with Great Falls at the bat..." They played Fort Shaw, and the article gives the names of the players. The Great Falls team could hit, but couldn't field, and Fort Shaw quickly scored a ton of runs. But it was getting dark, so the Fort Shaw team accepted an offer: call the game a draw, and Great Falls would furnish "sour toddies" for everyone at the local saloon! |
