Earliest Known Date Saturday, October 13, 1860 -- No later than October 1860
Location Union Springs, NY, United States
Description

The Auburn Weekly Union, Oct. 1860, reported that the Logan BBC of Auburn recently lost to the club of Union Springs 26-6. The Auburn players complained about the Union Springs playing field. Same issue has a long article noting that they Syracuse BBC beat Union Springs 30-27 at Auburn. [ba]

The first known ref to the Union Springs club is in a Syracuse paper in October 1860. The club payed the Syracuse BBC at Auburn NY, losing 30-27. "This game was for a prize of $20, which was put up by the Auburn club."

Mentioned in Utica Daily Observer, Dec. 24, 1860 as challenging Utica to a game on ice.

Union Springs NY is on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, about 35 miles SW of Syracuse. Auburn NY is about 10 miles NE of Union Springs and about 25 miles SW of Syracuse. Its current population is about 1000.

In December of 1860, an Auburn paper reported that Union Springs had challenged the Syracuse BBC to "play a match game of ball on the ice at Union Strings, each player mounted on skates. The Syracuse Club have accepted the challenge, and the day will be named as soon as strong ice appears at the Springs." We have no confirmation that this game was played. [sabrpedia]

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
