Description The San Francisco Examiner, Dec. 18, 1889 records a game of baseball played on the ice. The contestants were the crews of ice-bound whalers, including the Orca and Beluga, calling themselves the Arctics, and the crew of the US Revenue cutter Thetis. The prize was for a store of tobacco. The game was called after 7 innings when the ice parted.

Same Dec. 8, 1889 recounts the cruise of the Thetis, which was tasked with exploring Alaska's north coast. It appears the game happened near Herschel Island. But the article isn't exact. It could have been anywhere from Herschel Island to Point Barrow, Alaska.
