Description | The Quincy (IL) Whig Sept. 1, 1868 says that a Hannibal BBC will soon visit Quincy to play a match game against the local team. Same Aug. 6, 1868 mentions the Nationals Club of Hannibal. Hannibal MO (1870 pop. 10,125; current pop. about 17,500) is about 110 miles NW of St. Louis and on the Mississippi River. It is the boyhood home of serious base ball fan Mark Twain. Wikipedia: "The town has other distinctions as well. In the Broadway musical Damn Yankees, Hannibal was the hometown of the protagonist’s assumed persona (Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO)." |
