Description | Union prisoners at the Camp Ford POW Camp in Tyler played baseball. See A. J. H. Duganne, Twenty Months in the Department of the Gulf (1865), chapter 40, the Harpers Weekly, March 4, 1863, as well as more modern sources. See also the reminiscences of Camp Ford in the National Tribune, July 14, 1910: "For pastime the boys organized a base ball game. Every morning there was one team on the ground playing ball." Tyler TX is about 100 miles E of Dallas. Fd. 1846, it had 2423 residents in 1880 and 1,750 in 1870. |
