Text

"William Vroman recalls attending a Fourth of July celebration in 1845:

'The programme was for fun generally, and we had it. Rifle shooting for sheep, home-made Scotch whisky and beer, playing base ball, dancing the 'Highland fling' on the green, with Billy Ray and his bagpipes for music.'

Comment
I'm not sure that the combination of homemade whiskey and Billy Ray playing the bagpipes would be such a good idea, particularly not with rifles lying about.  -- Richard Hershberger

Especially if the sheep had the rifles -- Protoball Functionary

As of December 2020, Protoball has no base ball is known in Madison before 1860.
