Nick Name Edmonton
Earliest Known Date May 1884
Location Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Nine Class Senior
Description

Ducey, "The Rajah..." pp. 4-5, 21-22, citing the Edmonton Bulletin, May 24, 1884: "A Base ball organization meeting was held on Saturday evening last in Ross Brothers building for the purpose of organizing a base ball club. E. Lyons was elected captain, and Jos. Ross secretary-treasurer. The club now numbers 30 members..."

The book says baseball came to Edmonton and Calgary in 1884. The first game was played soon after, "on the race track behind the old Methodist church, in an area that later became the center of downtown Edmonton."

The Edmonton Bulletin, July 5, 1884, p. 3: "Dominion Day [in Edmonton] ...The baseball club turned out in good form and a very exciting match was played. The club is without a rival in the North-West."

Edmonton was not officially founded until 1885.

Comment

The church near the race track is probably the McDougall United Methodist church, at the corner of McDonald and 101st streets, just northeast of old Fort Edmonton.
