Description

Bob A. Nestor, Baseball in Greenville and Spartanburg, page 7, says Wofford College played “Upstate’s first recorded baseball game in the 1869-70 student year,” beating a team called the Athletics 55-51.

The Charleston Daily News, June 10, 1869 reports that two Wofford College clubs, the Wofford College and the Pioneer, played a game, with the former winning 66-57.

Spartanburg SC (1870 pop. about 1100) is in the NE corner of SC and about 75 miles SW of Charlotte NC.
