Description

The Frontier Club of Fort Leavenworth KS is listed in Peverelly [1866].

The Leavenworth Times, Nov. 17, 1865, and the Leavenworth Bulletin, Mov. 10, 16, and 18, 1865, report the first (?) meeting and game of the Frontier BBC.

The Fort Leavenworth or Fort Scott club may have been the first to form in Kansas. Union army veteran Col. Thomas Moonlight helped found the club.

The Daily Kansas Tribune (of Lawrence), Oct. 26, 1866: "A base ball match for the championship of Kansas took place yesterday at Leavenworth, between the Frontier Club of that city and the Wyandotte club." They didn't know who won yet.

On August 1, 1867, "Freedom's Champion" newspaper reported that the Frontier Club claimed to be the champion team of Kansas.

Fort Leavenworth KS is about 5 miles N of Leavenworth KS. and about 30 miles NW of Kansas City KS. It is about 3 miles W of the Missouri River and thus the KS/MO state line. It had about 20,000 residents in 1866.

Comment

The diary of Lt. George M. Templeton relates that on March 19, May 3 and June 6, 1866 baseball games were played by the soldiers at Leavenworth. He mentions that Col. Moonlight was one of the players in the May 3rd game, and that he umpired the June 6 game (which ended in a 49-12 score).
