Description | The Alert Club of Elmira NY is listed in Peverelly [1866]. It may well have formed earlier. This club sent D. B. Hill as a delegate to the 1866 National Baseball Convention. This was David B. Hill, the city attorney, later governor of New York and US Senator. See New York Clipper, Dec. 22, 1866. See ballgames. The Elmira Telegram, Sept. 12, 1915 has a long article on baseball in Elmira in the 1860s. It discusses at some length the Alert and the Excelsiors. Gives the officers of these clubs. |

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know
Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
