Biography

A Rufus Porterfield was born about 1845 in Tennessee. He is listed in the 1880 census as a "porter."
In 1910 a black man named Rufus Porterfield (son of Charles Porterfield) died in Nashville, but his birth was listed as 1851, which would have made him 15 at the time of the incident. This same man (also a porter by profession) is listed in 1872 Freedman's Bank Records as being 19 years old, which would have put him as 13 years old in 1866.

Comment

It is not clear whether BBBBBC was an actual club, or merely an informal group of players saddled with a sarcastic moniker in a local newspaper. He was fined $5 for playing base ball on the sabbath (September 16, 1866).
