Description | "Baseball in Croatia. American sailors brought this attractive and interesting sport to Croatia in December 1918. At the end of World War I, French, Italian, British, and American warships were stationed in the Split port. The sailors from these ships went into the city looking for entertainment, and some sought sporting activities. And so the American sailors from their ships the "Pittsburgh" and the "Olympia", on the "Stari plac" (the soccer field of HNK Hajduk) began to play their favorite game – baseball. With time they began to play their game as an opener to the soccer games that Hajduk would play against the British sailors." Per www.bkslavbrod.com/en/Croatia Chetwynd, Baseball in Europe, p. 187, repeats this story, in a shortened form. |
