Biography
Hugh French was a native of Knoxville. During the Civil War, he served as a private in the 5th Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry, Company C. French was a member of an "old" Knoxville family, and he was a greatgrandson of Knoxville founder General James White.
French is listed as a scorer in the Sept. 13, 1868 Republican Banner account of the Tennessee state championship match with the Nashville BBC.
