Description

"[in 1879] baseball games were organized in Melbourne when the St. Kilda Baseball Club wanted to give some competition to a touring American Negro music troupe, the Georgia Minstrels."

Joseph Clark, Australia: Baseball Down Under, in G. Gmelch, Baseball Without Borders (U Nebraska Press, 2006), page 291.

Comment

St. Kilda is a suburb of Melbourne.

This minstrel group is the Hicks (later, Hicks-Sawyer) "negro" minstrel troupe, which toured Australia and New Zealand in 1878-79 and 1888-89, and had its own baseball team. They played several games against the St. Kilda BBC, usually at the St. Kilda cricket grounds. See The Melbourne Age, June 14, 21, 23, 28, July 5, 28, 1879; St. Kilda Telegraph, July 26, 1879. The latter says that in a game the Saturday before, the result was a 37-37 tie. [ba]
