Text | [reporting the AA meeting of 12/5-12/6/1888] In the evening the election for officers came up and a lively time was the result. It was thought that the pins had been set up for the election of Mr. Zack Phelps, of Louisville, to the position, but when it came to a vote it was found that the clubs were equally divided as between Phelps, and the incumbent, Wheeler Wikoff. Wikoff had St. Louis, Columbus, Kansas City and Cincinnati, while Baltimore, Brooklyn, Louisville and the Athletic Club favored Phelps. When Mr. Phelps, who had been led to believe that his candidacy was the wish of nearly all of the clubs, saw that he had not even a majority and that a deadlock was the result he withdrew before a vote was taken, and Mr. Wikoff was unanimously elected president, secretary and treasurer for another year. |
