Text | [Maryland vs. Atlantic 7/30/1869] Its [the game's] tediousness was much increased by the laxity of the umpire [Bass of the Powhattan Club], who is a fine player, but not at all competent to discharge the duties of an umpire. He did not call a single ball and but one strike during the whole game. |
