Text | Joe Gerhardt will try a new plan of umpiring this afternoon. Cincinnati Enquirer October 19, 1883 The cricket style of umpiring is being tried, the umpire standing in the field just beside the pitcher. Kelly, Gerhardt and Harry Wright have tried it.
