Text | [New York vs. Chicago 7/17/1888] Owing to the disgraceful scenes on the ball field during the other two games, it was agreed to try the double umpire system. Ex-Umpire Powers of the Western Association and ex-league Umpire Furlong were chosen, and while they erred in some cases there was much less fault finding than before. … In the double umpire system the umpire alternate after every inning. One would attend to the bases while the other would call balls and strikes. |
