Text	Hanlon played a clever trick on Burns in the Detroit-Chicago game of May 9. The Detroits were at bat, with a man on third and a man on first. The man on first ran down to second; Flint threw the ball to Burns, who could easily have touched out the runner, but instead held the ball in hand, watching the man on third and no man was put out. Hanlon's trick consisted in his peculiar way of coaching the man on third. He stood with his feet on the white line and as Burns received the ball from Flint, Hanlon made a swift dash toward the plate. Burns was confused into thinking it was the man on third who was making for home and so held the ball momentarily and lost the chance for an out.
