Text	[Athletics vs. Olympics of Philadelphia 4/24/1872] [Billy McLean the umpire] Cuthbert waited a long time, but, failing to get a ball to suit, went to first on called balls. Philadelphia Sunday Dispatch April 28, 1872 [Baltimore vs. Mutual 5/4/1872] All were surprised at Ferguson’s umpiring. Several times he allowed wide balls to be delivered uncalled in direct violation of the rules, and he was altogether too lenient in calling strikers. Umpires have no right to be judges of the law, or to decide otherwise than by the letter of the rules. Ferguson ought to be better posted. All “unfair” balls must be called whenever delivered.
