Text | [Atlantic vs. Eckford 10/9/1869] The return match between these clubs for the nominal title of the championship of the United States... In referring to this match as that for the nominal title of champions, we simply desire to be understood that the real championship belongs only to that club which as not been defeated in a regular series of matches throughout the season; and there is but one club in the country which can justly lay claim to this latter title, and that is the Cincinnati club, for they have not only not lost a series of games with any club this season, but they have yet to encounter their first defeat, although they have played games with every first-class club in the National Association. |
