Text | [Mutual vs. Athletic 10/24/1870] The contest proved to be exciting throughout, but the result was the defeat of the Mutuals, brought about by the adroit maneuvering of the Athletics in their last inning, when they managed, while at the bat, to change the dead ball for a lively one, and going in for some of their old-time rubber-ball batting, they added ten runs to their score, the ninth inning of the Mutuals having ended with the total at 12 to 7 in favor of the New Yorkers. |
