| Text | [from Joe Pritchard's column] President Von der Ahe is now, no doubt, of the opinion that but one club can be kept up in St. Louis, and but very little money can be made even then. His experimental White Stockings cost him about $7,000, so I hear from good authority. He will realize probably this amount when the players and franchise are disposed of, but there are still several players, as well as the franchise, yet to be disposed of, and should he get back the full amount he has expended, where is there any profit in the enterprise? The fact has been demonstrated upon two occasions that the city will not keep up two professional clubs, and it is now safe to say that it will be some time before another club is placed in the Future Great. The Sporting Life June 27, 1888 After worrying the Western Association for many weeks Mr. Von der Ahe has finally taken himself and his St. Louis Whites out of the Association for the Association's good. The mistake in admitting both St. Louis and Chicago was pointed out last winter when the scheme was first broached. The fate of the Whites had for some time been a foregone conclusion. Its best players had been sold and transferred to other clubs, the worthless franchise had been vainly hawked about for weeks and finally the collapse came Saturday, June 23, when Von der Ahe unceremoniously disbanded the team, which had been held together only long enough to enable its owner to realize all he could out of the sale of players to reimburse him for his loses.
