Text	[Mutual vs. Southern 12/26/1869] The New Yorkers quite enjoyed the new custom they had to go through, shaking hands with their opponents before the fight began. This is the custom in the extreme South in base ball matches. The way it was done is as follows:– Everything being in readiness, the field cleared, the umpire chosen, the two nines formed in line, the Southerns at second base, and the Mutuals at the home plate. To the air of Dixie, which was rung out by Jaeger’s band, the boys marched to the centre of the infield, where they shook hands, amidst the loud applause of those assembled.
