Text | The umpire should also be uniformed and never permitted to go upon the field in the presence of a large crowd and make a spectacle of himself with a sort of ward summer dress, such as some of last season's collection wore. Cincinnati Commercial Tribune December 17, 1882 As to the uniforming of an umpire, no one ever though of putting on them a regular base ball uniform. But they should be furnished with a genteel suit of some agreed upon style and be required to wear it on all occasions while umpiring; should not be permitted to take off their coats and roll up their sleeves like a prize fighter, as was done in several instances last year. If we are to be “gentlemen” to umpire games this year let the people not be made to think they are a class who are not accustomed to wear a coat in company.
