It is pretty generally believed that some of the Athletic players have decided not to play after a certain date if their salaries are not paid. Philadelphia Item August 27, 1876

The New Haven Club is in very bad condition, financially, being about $7,000 behind. The players have not received their salary for some time, and trouble is promised, as Knodell and Spence have left for Guelph, Canada, where they will play with the Maple Leaf nine.
