Text | Of late the public exhibitions of loud betting have become a great nuisance, so much so that the papers of some localities have felt called upon to deny that the clubs from their vicinity have any such followers. A fitting example of this may [be] seen in the attempts of the daily papers of Troy, N.Y., to exculpate the Haymakers from any such imputation, while the facts of the case are that there has been hardly a game played by that club upon their own grounds (especially when they have succeeded in choosing their own umpire and think they are a sure thing) but that their President and other members of the club boldly stand out in front of the assembly and loudly proclaim, “I’ll bet 100 to 40 that the Haymaker club wins this game. |
