Text	[Athletic vs. Baltimore 8/22/1872] On account of the unenviable reputation of the roughs of Baltimore who attend base ball games, no foreign umpire could be persuaded to officiate in that position, Ferguson and Burdock, of the Atlantics of Brooklyn, both declining to serve, although they had been previously agreed upon by the managers of the two clubs. In this emergency, the Athletics were compelled to take an umpire from Baltimore, or else the game could not be played, and therefore Barrett, who has hitherto had a fair record as an honorable man, was selected to act...
