Text | [Canavan vs. Athletic 5/25/1872] ...the Canavan should have been chicagoed, but on the ninth inning, when two hands were out, and none on the bases, McBride, by an intentional muff and then by bad play of the same spirit, let them get a run. The effort was very transparent, and all present saw it, but Dick only laughed. Afterwards, however, by good hits, the Canavan sent their score up to 4, and were extremely gratified, although there is not doubt but that McBride’s intention was for them to have but one run. We are glad that Dick did so act, for it is very demoralizing to chicago any club, and the Athletic should do all they can to foster our amateur clubs, who will give a good return by practice afforded to the champions.
