Text | [Athletic vs. Merritt 4/25/1882] We have no doubt that Mr. Johnson intended to be honest and as impartial as possible, but some of his decisions were decidedly funny, and his manner of calling balls and strikes was decidedly original and unique. He would say, “Wa-al, I guess that's a ball,” and when asked by the astonished batter, “Are you sure?” would reply, “Wa-al, I guess I am! |
