Text | [Nationals vs. Excelsiors of Chicago 7/29/1867] In the Forest City match it was very properly agreed upon that passed balls should only allow of one base, there being no fence behind the catcher, as there should be on every ground. In this game, however, the Excelsiors refused to allow this rule, thinking that more passed balls would be made off Williams’s pitching than off their own. In this they made a great mistake, for the very reverse proved to be the case. |
