Text | Dick [Pearce] is the originator of that strategic style of batting known as “fair-foul hits,” the most difficult balls to field, as well as to hit properly, that there are. Any muffin batsman can hit a fair ball to the out-field, but it takes considerable judgment, a quick eye, plenty of nerve and skilful batting to make first-base by a well hit but fair-foul ball. When it is well done, it is a certain hit for first base, and any hit that ensures one base against sharp fielding shows skilful batting. |
