[Mutual vs. Union of Lansingburgh 9/25/1867 The clouds had been gathering fast since the commencement of the game, and rain was now momentarily expected as the boys started into the fifth inning. Devyr and Jewett were quickly put out, and Waterman, taking the bat, sent a ball to short-stop, but no effort was made to stop it, and Waterman easily got home on Bearman’s hit; and, although the latter might have easily been put out, he reached his base, making it evident that the Haymakers were doing their best to delay the game. C. Hunt now put up a foul, which, to his credit be it said, Craver took, and the side was out. Rain now commenced to fall, but the umpire called the Unions to the bat; they refused to come to time, and, as the Mutual nine were in position, and the pitcher sent in good balls, Mr. Birdsall [the umpire] called strikes on the players who should have presented themselves, and then declared the inning finished, and the game to have been won by the Mutual Club. The umpire, after the game, stated that had the Unions showed a disposition to obey the rules, and taken their places at the bat, he should immediately have called game; but, as they refused to do so, he visited the penalty upon them. ... The Unions certainly set a very bad precedent when they made the Morrisania boys play for an hour in the rain in Lansingburgh this Spring, and should not, therefore, grumble at the result of this contest New York Dispatch September 29, 1867

[from Answers to Correspondents] No club has a right to leave the field unless game is called by the Umpire, and any club doing so after five innings have been played, forfeits the game. In your case, if the Umpire did not call game the club remaining on the field and ready to play won.
