Text | [Irvington vs. Atlantic 9/24/1866] Dick Pearce took the bat and seemed to be rather shy of Walter's fierce pitching, waiting until the umpire [Brientnall of the Eureka] called “one ball.” At length he got one that suited him, and straightway went out on a foul tip. … Chapman waited for a chance until the umpire called “one ball” on Walters, and then made a safe hit to right field, securing his first base. … Walters at the bat, one strike, one ball, caught out by Chapman on a foul. … Mike Campbell, after the umpire had called one strike and one ball, secured his first on a ball muffed near the third base.
