Text | There are now only two games of ball which, to any extent, are popular in this country. They are cricket and base ball—the first of English origin; the other an American invention. Cricket is said to have been played as early as the sixteenth century, while base ball is the offspring, we believe, of the last decade. … Base ball owes birth to the game of town ball, a very inferior sport. |
